CityFront Forum with Prof. Allen Sanderson

“Chicago and 2016: Bidding ’til Bankrupt?”

September 22, 2009 | 6 – 7:30 p.m.
Graham School of General Studies
University of Chicago Gleacher Center
Room 40
Free event.

In this talk, just ten days before the International Olympic Committee announces its decision about the host site for the 2016 Summer Games, Allen Sanderson will discuss some urban myths and economic realities about the Olympic Games.

In examining the case for Chicago’s bid, the presentation will also examine the problems that host cities must confront as they try to cater to a powerful international monopoly (the IOC) and equally powerful local special interest groups. Finally, Sanderson will offer his perspective on Chicago’s chances of being awarded the 2016 Games, and what those who are closely following the bid process should watch for.

Allen Sanderson is a senior lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Chicago. A graduate of Brigham Young University and the University of Chicago, he served as associate provost at the University of Chicago from 1984-91. Professor Sanderson is an oft-cited authority on sports economics issues, a contributor to op-ed pages on sports and non-sports topics in newspapers around the country, and a frequent guest on national and Chicago-area television and radio programs. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Sports Economics.

Mr. Sanderson has published articles on the economics of sports stadiums, labor markets in professional sports, and competitive balance. His most recent professional journal article is about the economic impact of colleges and universities on their communities. In the June 22, 2009, issue of Forbes, he and Social Sciences Dean John Mark Hansen published an article on “The Olympics of Voting.”

  1. Friends of the Parks has not weighed in on this, and unfortunately is not likely to, having lost most of its teeth lately. Protect Our Parks, which has been defending Lincoln Park against the Latin School soccer field, is preoccupied with that. Still, we’re all allied one way or another.

  2. The next time No Games presents something as important as the “Book of Evidence” please please please have a graphic designer help you with it! Very important information should be presented more professionally, especially in the face of the millions being spent by the other side to make the bid look glossy and appealing. I’m saying this because I really care! The home made look is certainly authentic but I’m worried that it won’t be taken seriously.

  3. Is there any formal protest event planned for September 9th-12th? This sounds like the last chance for citizens to show their displeasure to the media en masse.
